“Then the Night Called You Home” is an exploration into portraiture, reimagining the Black figure in classical spaces. Incorporating conventions of traditional European painting and Christian iconography, LO’s 12 large scale works make parallels between sainthood, martyrdom, and the black experience through a contemporary lens.
Inspired in part by personal loss and the international mourning of victims of police violence, LO’s subjects are placed within a space of ambiguity. Their presence within atemporality suggest moments that are not confined to a specific era - a cyclical state of strife for the Black American and the fear of possible perpetual suffering. The intimately scaled works, undoubtedly heavy at first glance, hint at something hopeful and brighter for those who dare to look closer - the tenacity of the Black spirit.
