About the artist.
Bio
LO (b. 1998, She/They) is a Jamaican-American visual artist based in Atlanta.
Statement
My work is a meditative look at my personal history and a way to understand the world around me. My Jamaican and Gullah-Geechee background and experiences with Christianity directly influence my work, and it is within this context that I create the world of my portraits. Incorporating conventions of traditional European style and Christian iconography, I speak to my own truths, while also paralleling biblical references with the Black experience through a contemporary lens. Intermixing old ideas and new, I hope to give fresh context to established stories, shed light on Black spirituality, and perhaps create myths of my own.
